This 11-day guided tour brings Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands to you through the quiet wartime fields, cool canal air and the rasp of wood beneath a shoemaker’s blade. In Luxembourg, you follow sweet and savoury aromas to a farm-to-table feast at L’Écurie du Parc, a former horse stable turned restaurant. After dinner, you pass along the street below 12th-century Clervaux Castle, its pale walls high on the rocky promontory above the town. At the star-shaped Mardasson Monument, you follow the spiral staircase upwards, with the names and battle history carved into the stone around you, then step out to look across the fields where the Battle of the Bulge was fought. In Amsterdam, your boat drifts through the UNESCO-listed canal district, passing 16th-century merchant houses and Magere Brug, the slim white bridge over the Amstel. At the Rijksmuseum, a Local Specialist guides you to Rembrandt’s Night Watch, before you watch a shoemaker pare and shape traditional clogs by hand.

Brussels Arrival and Grand Place Welcome
Your airport transfer takes you from Brussels airport to your centrally located hotel, with the afternoon free after check-in. Later, you join your Travel Director in the Old Town, where the small bronze Manneken Pis draws a crowd for a very Brussels kind of humour. The streets carry the sweet smell of waffles and warm sugar towards Grand Place, where gilded guildhalls, carved stone and the low murmur of voices gather around one of Europe’s most beautiful squares. Dinner follows at a local restaurant nearby, where the room warms with clinking glasses, shared laughter and conversation with the people you’ll travel with.
Explore Brussels Streets
With your choice experience, you might learn how Napoleon’s final defeat unfolded on Waterloo’s open battlefield, or follow the scent of cocoa into a private Brussels truffle-making lesson, dipping, rolling and dusting chocolate truffles with a master chocolatier before enjoying the finished pieces. If you choose Brussels, you continue through the city with a Local Specialist, past ornate façades and old shopfronts, where you might catch the sound of a tram bell ringing through the street. The rest of the day is yours, with time to linger over lunch or join an Optional Experience to Antwerp, where another side of Belgium waits along the river.
Brussels, Ghent And Bruges: Flanders In Full
In Brussels, the painted eaves of the Chinese and Japanese Pavilions mingle with the cool metallic gleam of the Atomium’s spheres. Then the road carries you across the pasturelands of Flanders to Ghent, the City of Flowers, where petals spill from window boxes and you catch the soft scent of blooms by the canal. With a Local Specialist, you stay close to the quays, hearing water lap against stone as boats pass beneath stepped gables and old façades. Inside St Bavo’s Cathedral, the canal sounds fall away into cooler air, carved columns and Van Eyck’s Ghent Altarpiece, before you see the Castle of the Counts and its stone walls above the city. Bruges is yours for the next two nights, its canals slipping between medieval façades and stone bridges. With a Local Specialist, you follow narrow streets lined with 16th-century high-gabled houses towards Market Square, where the 83-metre Belfry rises above the rooftops and you might catch its chimes carrying across the square. In Burg Square, you pass the Gothic town hall, taking in its carved stonework before pausing inside the Holy Blood Chapel, where painted walls and stained-glass windows sit in the hush of a sacred space.
Bruges At Leisure: Canals And Cafe Time
Today, Bruges is yours to explore without hurry. You might linger by canals where old brick and narrow windows break into wavering reflections, or perhaps slip into a cafe, where porcelain clicks against saucers and coffee warms the air. Later, you may choose today’s Optional Experience to Ypres. After time in the medieval Market Square, you’ll attend the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate, a daily tribute to the fallen Allied Forces. As traffic is halted beneath the arch and bugles sound, thoughts turn to the red poppies that came to symbolise Flanders Fields and to the lives remembered here each evening.
Wallonia’s Abbey Traditions: Maredsous To Clervaux
The road carries you through Wallonia into the green folds of the Molignée valley, where Maredsous Abbey stands in neo-Gothic stone above the trees. Pointed arches, tall lancet windows and cloistered courtyards bring you into a Benedictine world shaped by prayer, study, craft and hospitality since 1872. At the abbey, you’ll have the chance to savour Maredsous beer with soft malt notes, a clean bitter edge and a small ring of pale foam, followed by creamy cave-matured Maredsous cheese with an orange rind. From here, you continue into the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and your 18th-century château stay in Clervaux. At Les Écuries du Parc, your Farm-to-Table dinner brings the countryside indoors, perhaps with the scent of warm bread, herbs and butter from the table as seasonal produce arrives on the plate. Afterwards, you might head out into the evening, where the illuminated 12th-century castle watches over the town.
Follow Luxembourg’s Heights Into Old Town
You'll travel into Luxembourg City with your Local Specialist, beginning at the Luxembourg American Cemetery, where General George S. Patton rests among the men of the Third Army. Rows of white markers stretch across the grass, their pale stone carrying names, ranks and dates. On Pont Adolphe, you pause high above the Pétrusse Valley, with trees, shaded paths and old stone defences far below. Leaving the bridge, you pass down into the UNESCO-listed Old Town’s rock-cut walls, narrow lanes and fortified stone before the Grand Ducal Palace brings a flourish of ceremony, its 16th-century Flemish Renaissance facade worked with patterned windows and delicate balconies. With time to explore, you might follow the old streets into everyday Luxembourg, past shopfronts, terrace chatter and the warm scent of bread from a nearby bakery. Or choose today’s Optional Experience to Trier, birthplace of Karl Marx, where a Local Specialist leads you through one of Germany’s oldest cities to the Porta Nigra, its weathered sandstone arches carrying the scale of ancient Rome. You return to your château in the green folds of the Luxembourg Ardennes, where wooded hills line the road and cooler country air brushes your skin.
Travel From Bastogne Into Modern Rotterdam
Your day begins in Bastogne, where the Mardasson Monument stands in the form of a five-pointed star, dedicated to the U.S. troops who died during the Battle of the Bulge. You may choose to climb to the top, looking out across the Ardennes landscape and taking in the setting of the winter fighting in 1944. At the Bastogne War Museum, photographs, film and wartime objects help you trace the causes, events and consequences of the Second World War. Your route then carries you through all three Benelux countries before Rotterdam arrives in a rush of water, cranes and modern design, rebuilt from wartime devastation and home to Europe’s largest port. With your Travel Director, you’ll take in the Markthal, where spice, citrus and hot griddles rise beneath the vast Horn of Plenty ceiling, before you look across the Nieuwe Maas to the Erasmus Bridge, its white cables lifting cleanly above the river.
Lowland Landscapes: The Hague To Amsterdam
At an original Delft Blue workshop, the faint mineral note of clay may meet you at the door. Inside, you watch as white earthenware, cobalt pigment and fine brushwork become the Netherlands’ blue-and-white pottery. From there, you continue to The Hague, the Netherlands’ seat of government. Here, you’ll see where parliament sits and pause at the Peace Palace, with its red brick, pale stone and wrought-iron gates. On select departures, you move through Keukenhof as it blooms with tulips, hyacinths and planted beds, the freshness of bulbs and damp earth in the air. You continue through the Dutch countryside, past villages, low fields and windmills, before arriving in Amsterdam for three nights. In Amsterdam, you'll join a canal dinner cruise, where the menu reflects the city’s longstanding Indonesian influence, shaped by its colonial past. As the boat moves beneath low bridges, you might catch ginger, coconut and chilli warmth from the table while gabled houses pass at the window.
Amsterdam At Leisure: Canals, Bells And Galleries
Amsterdam is yours to explore as you wish, with 17th-century merchants’ houses leaning towards the canals and bicycle bells ringing through the city. You might notice carved lintels, hoist beams and narrow brick fronts, with shop windows and independent galleries woven into streets shaped by centuries of trade. Or choose today’s Optional Experience to IJsselmeer, crossing the lake to Marken and Volendam, where timber houses, fishing traditions and regional dress belong to communities shaped by the water. Here, you’ll have the chance to sample Dutch pancakes, warm from the pan and soft at the centre, with butter melting into the edges. As the day turns towards evening, you might find a table by the water, browse an independent gallery or join an Optional Experience dinner.
Discover Amsterdam Then Meet Monnickendam Makers
At the Rijksmuseum, your Local Specialist leads you through the Gallery of Honour, where canvases by the Dutch Masters line the walls. You may take a moment and pause before Rembrandt’s Night Watch, taking in one of the Netherlands’ defining works. You may choose an optional experience to continue to Museum Van Loon and slip inside an elegant 17th-century canal-side house, complete with period rooms, intricate painted ceilings and grand portraits hung throughout. Later, in Monnickendam, you can learn the cheesemaker’s craft from milk to finished round, perhaps noticing the creamy tang as curds are worked and pressed. Then, with the scent of fresh-cut wood in the air, you'll see a traditional shoemaker turn a simple block into clogs, pale shavings curling from the bench. In the evening, you'll join your Travel Director and new friends for dinner.
