Today the lumber barons are long gone but their Victorian mansions still stand, and the town has traded lumber for America’s favorite pastime, baseball. In 1867, Frederick Douglass spoke to a crowd at The Doebler House, a hotel that possibly worked with the Underground Railroad, housing people as they moved north. The Freedom Road area offered caves in wooded areas, barns, secret hiding places, and the friends and family of Daniel Hughes discreetly provided shelter, food, and assistance to people traveling north to freedom.
