Over 20 days, Scandinavia moves from sea air and city harbours to Sami lands and the high Arctic. You cruise across the Baltic to Helsinki, follow the scent of fresh bread, dark Finnish liquorice and smoked reindeer through the harbour market. In Stockholm, ABBA’s melodies fill the museum, while the Vasa Galleon’s preserved timbers, cannon and carved ornaments show the scale and ambition of a 17th-century warship that sank on its maiden voyage. In Copenhagen, you'll stand by the harbour with Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid, her bronze gaze fixed on the water. Oslo takes you deeper into history, with Viking ships, royal palaces and harbour-facing ramparts. Farther north, Lapland stretches across the home territories of the nomadic Sami community before you visit Trine Lyrek’s farm and meet her Arctic dogsled racing Alta huskies. At North Cape, travel in search of the midnight sun and raise a glass of champagne with local caviar beside towering sea cliffs in the lingering glow of the far north.

First Impressions: Copenhagen and Tivoli Gardens
On arrival in Copenhagen, colourful painted façades stretch ahead as cyclists glide past, their bells chiming through the fresh harbour air. This evening, join your Travel Director and fellow travellers for dinner, with the easy chatter of new company around the table. Later, Tivoli Gardens lights up the night in a wash of lanterns, music and old-world fairground magic, inviting you into Copenhagen’s playful side.
Explore Copenhagen’s Palaces and Harbour
Copenhagen unfolds with your Local Specialist, from royal residences and palace courtyards to the waterfront houses of Nyhavn. By the harbour, you pause beside Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid, her bronze figure turned towards the passing boats. You'll trace Denmark’s royal history through Rosenborg Castle, Amalienborg Palace and Christiansborg Palace, passing guarded gateways, ceremonial squares and the quiet grandeur of their state rooms. At Copenhagen Cathedral, you feel the air turn cooler beneath its neoclassical lines, where King Frederik X married Queen Mary and Denmark’s largest bell hangs high in the tower. This afternoon, you have time at leisure, or you may choose an Optional Experience along the Danish Riviera to visit one of North Zealand’s fairytale-style castles.
Denmark to Sweden: Øresund and Stockholm
You'll leave Copenhagen behind on the Øresund crossing, dipping below the sea before emerging into the open air of the artificial island of Peberholm. From there, road and rail stretch across the long bridge to Sweden, open water spreading below the span before Skåne leads you past fertile farmland and the wide blue edge of Lake Vättern. You may catch your first glimpse of Stockholm on the horizon, its 14 islands linked by bridges, with channels threading between red-roofed buildings and green shores. This evening, you may choose an Optional Experience and enjoy Swedish cuisine served in traditional surroundings.
Visit Stockholm Before the Baltic Crossing
Begin at Stockholm City Hall with your Local Specialist. You'll pass into Gyllene salen, where flashes of gold dance across the gleaming marble floor and mosaic walls glow beneath glittering chandeliers. Then you enter the grand Blå hallen, where high red brick walls rise far above pale stone arches in a vast room used for the Nobel Prize banquets. In Gamla Stan, you wander through the medieval heart of the city, its narrow lanes and worn stone leading past the cathedral to the Royal Palace. Your afternoon is at leisure, perhaps spent with the Vasa Galleon, where cannon, carved timber and towering masts show the scale of a warship built to impress yet lost on its maiden voyage. Later, board your Baltic cruise to Finland. Over dinner on board, the city slips away and the archipelago begins: thousands of islands, dark pines and rocky islets passing beyond your A-class sea-view cabin as the northern sun lingers low on the mid-summer horizon.
Follow Helsinki from Harbour to Market
In Helsinki, you walk through the Finnish capital’s bold architecture and leafy parks. You may catch sight of Helsinki Cathedral’s white columns and green dome, harbourfront buildings and ferries gently cruising across the blue water. With your Local Specialist, you'll head for a traditional food market, following the warm scent of griddled pancakes, sharp liquorice and smoked reindeer between the stalls. Later, your time is your own. You might stay close to the harbour, browsing handmade crafts, fruit piled in bright crates and souvenirs that carry the practical beauty of Finnish design. Or perhaps take a seat on a nearby park bench and listen to the rustle of leaves around you.
Finnish Views: Puijo Tower and Kallavesi
Deeper into Finland, spruce and birch line your route and lakes appear between the trees in flashes of silver. As you approach Kuopio, Lake Kallavesi and the wooded Puijo ridge draw nearer, with small cottages and slips of shoreline cutting through the green. In Kuopio, the lift carries you up Puijo Tower, where you'll look out from more than 200 metres above the lake, over forest, city roofs and islands scattered across Finnish Lakeland.
Lapland Bound: Bothnian Bay to Rovaniemi
As the route turns towards the Arctic, you cross into Lapland, native home to the nomadic Sami community. In Oulu, northern Finland’s oldest city, you’re never far from the Bothnian Bay, with gull calls overhead and cool port air moving through the streets. You have time to explore the city centre, spread across several islands. Perhaps you hear bicycles clicking over bridges and paths or the soft clatter of boats swaying in the harbour. Or you may sit near the port and watch the light shimmer across pale northern water. Then the journey continues to Rovaniemi, the modern capital of Lapland, as the landscape grows more remote and the Arctic Circle lies ahead.
Arctic Circle: Rovaniemi and Lapland Traditions
You cross the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi, standing with one side of the painted line behind you and the wide north ahead. With your Local Specialist, you take in Alvar Aalto’s Town Hall before you enter Rovaniemi Church and feel the air cool around pale walls, wooden pews and the great altar fresco rising ahead. Your choice experience takes you further into Lapland. One path leads to Santa Claus, where you may meet him and enjoy a touch of Christmas in the Arctic. The other leads into the forest with your Local Specialist, where fresh air moves between pine trees and the scent of damp earth hangs low along the path. This afternoon, perhaps spend time at the open-air museum or beneath Arktikum’s long glass roof, where exhibits explore Arctic nature, culture and life in the far north.
Lapland Wilds: Ranua to Ivalo
Begin with a relaxed start this morning, or choose an Optional Experience to Ranua Wildlife Park, where you may spot polar bears, lynxes or even a wolverine among the animals of the far north. The Four Winds Road then carries you farther north, past open land and low scrub, the cool air on your face as you watch for reindeer herds roaming freely, antlers lifted against the pale Lapland sky. At one of the region’s oldest churches, you pause among plain timber and soft light. Near the old gold centre of Tankavaara, Urho Kekkonen National Park spreads into fell, forest and raw Arctic space, a glimpse of Europe’s last great wilderness.
Search for Midnight Sun at Nordkapp
Cross the rolling tundra into Norway, stopping in Karasjok to see the Sámi Parliament before the road follows Porsanger Fjord towards Honningsvåg. Here, you may catch the strong scent of sea air drifting through the northern fishing town, water lapping against boats along the quay and the great stretch of the Barents Sea beyond. During your time at leisure, you may choose an Optional Experience around Gjesværstappen, where steep island cliffs shelter puffins, kittiwakes, gannets, guillemots and white-tailed eagles, with the chance to spot a grey seal or porpoise from the boat. Tonight, you'll travel to Nordkapp in search of the midnight sun, raising a glass of bubbles with caviar at the northern edge of mainland Europe, beside towering cliffs and the lingering glow of the far north.
Through Finnmark to Alta
This morning, enjoy a relaxed start before you cross Finnmark, Norway’s northernmost county, past rolling tundra, low ridges and isolated dwellings set wide apart beneath the open sky. By afternoon, Alta is yours to explore, a northern town shaped by fishing, mining and the cold, clear river that runs through it. You may visit the Northern Lights Cathedral, its silver curves spiralling above the town against the northern sky. Or travel by riverboat along the Alta River, with wind on your cheeks, spray at the side of the boat and the canyon narrowing ahead.
See Alta’s Rock Art and Huskies
After a Relaxed Start, you choose how close to Alta’s ancient past you want to get: time in the town centre, or a visit with your Local Specialist to the UNESCO-listed Rock Art of Alta. At the carvings, your eye follows lines cut into weathered stone, thousands of marks left by early Arctic communities. Later, the Lyrek family welcomes you to their working husky farm, where an oven-baked lunch brings regional flavours to the table, perhaps fresh Arctic fish or reindeer with crisp salads and wine. Afterwards, you meet Alaskan huskies bred for endurance and speed on the snow, along with the next generation of pups who may one day race across the Arctic.
Wartime Norway: Kåfjord to Narvik
As you travel south, you pass Kåfjord, where salt air lifts from the fjord and steep rock rises around the place the World War II German battleship Tirpitz was once stationed. You hear tales of one of World War II’s first large-scale battles as the road carries you towards the Lyngen Alps, 90 kilometres of pale glaciers, jagged ridges and mountain light stretching across the distance. In Narvik, the air sharpens between sea and peak, with harbour routes, railway lines and mountain passes all tied to the city’s wartime importance. This afternoon, you may choose an Optional Experience at the Narvik War Museum, moving through photographs, artefacts and personal accounts that trace the 1940 Battles of Narvik and the impact of occupation on everyday life in the Arctic.
Across Tysfjord to Mosjoen
Journey south to Skarberget, where you’ll board a ferry to Bognes. Step out on deck as Tysfjord opens around you, its deep waters framed by steep granite walls and northern Norway’s coastline. Continue to Fauske for lunch at leisure before travelling through the beautiful mountain landscapes of Saltfjellet. At the Arctic Circle Centre, pause for an epic photo beside the monument marking this famous geographical boundary at approximately 66°33' north. You’ll reflect on how this invisible line is associated with two of the Arctic’s most extraordinary natural phenomena: the midnight sun and polar night. Later, you’ll arrive in Mosjøen, Helgeland’s oldest town, whose history was shaped by the 19th-century timber trade. Settle into your hotel before enjoying an included buffet dinner.
Watch Laksfoss Before Reaching Trondheim
In Namdalen, the road runs through river country as you listen for the roar of Laksfoss Falls and watch for salmon leaping upstream. Past the village of Hell, you continue to Trondheim, Norway’s third largest city and once the seat of its Viking kings. Along the Nidelva, you may wander beside painted wooden wharves leaning over the river, or pause before Nidaros Cathedral rising in carved stone nearby. At your hotel, you have time to settle in after the road, with Trondheim’s river air and surrounding hills just outside.
Cruise Beneath Geirangerfjord’s Cliffs
Your road through Norwegian Fjordland rises into the Dovre Mountains, where you watch rivers drop in white threads towards green valleys and snow stay bright on distant peaks. Through Dovrefjell National Park, you pass lakes, high plateaus and open mountain country before reaching Lom, where you may pause before the carved details of a dark-timbered stave church. At Geirangerfjord, you board a cruise across still water, hearing the low wash against the boat as you look up to sheer cliffs and waterfalls falling in long silver lines. Later, your hotel looks over the fjord landscape, where you can pause with the mountains, water and deep valley air around you.
Explore Geiranger and Trollstigen
You have the day to explore Geiranger’s UNESCO-listed fjords and mountains, from low shorelines to the high roads carved into Norway’s steep country. Perhaps choose an Optional Experience along Trollstigen, the Troll’s Road, where the route climbs through 11 hairpin bends and the roar of Stigfossen rises beside the coach in bursts of spray. Above it all, you see the road drop away beneath you in silver loops, with green folds of valley and pale rock stretching far below.
Oslo Arrival: Lillehammer, Bjørvika and Dinner
Norway’s fjord country gives way to valleys, farmsteads and mountain slopes as you pass through landscapes associated with Ibsen’s Peer Gynt and the music of Edvard Grieg. In Lillehammer, your Travel Director introduces the former Winter Olympic host city, where memories of the 1994 event linger in ski jumps, sporting arenas and crisp alpine air. You'll continue to Oslo, Norway’s modern capital, where Bjørvika rises at the fjord in white marble, glass and sharp city lines, the Opera House sloping towards the water as if the city has opened a path to the sea. This evening, you and your fellow travellers will settle into an evening meal.
Visit Akershus, Palace Park and Frogner
With your Local Specialist, you'll walk near the stone ramparts and spires of medieval Akershus Castle, the harbour air moving around the fortress walls as the Oslofjord opens beyond them. At the Royal Palace, you'll pause by the broad square and Palace Park, where lawns, old trees and small ponds sit alongside the neoclassical lines of Norway’s royal residence. In Frogner Park, stroll among Gustav Vigeland’s bronze, granite and cast-iron figures. This afternoon, the city is yours to explore, perhaps by the water, or along another Oslo street, park or gallery that catches your eye.
Oslo Farewell And Scandinavian Goodbyes
You'll say goodbye to your Travel Director and fellow travellers, as your Scandinavian journey comes to a close.
