Day 1 - Arrive Tokyo

Welcome to Tokyo, the energetic and cosmopolitan capital of Japan. Marrying ancient traditions with modern innovations, Tokyo offers a sensory overload of neon lights, vibrant street fashion and exquisite cuisine. Be met on arrival and transfer to your hotel, then your Insider Experience awaits tonight.

Insider Experience - Welcome Dinner

Indulge in a Welcome Dinner with two included beverages at a local Japanese restaurant and get to know your fellow travellers.

Day 2 - Tokyo

After breakfast, embark on a visit to the Imperial Palace, located on the former site of Edo Castle, a large park area surrounded by moats and massive stone walls in the center of Tokyo, and the residence of Japan's Imperial Family. Next, it’s on to the Asakusa, to explore Temple Sensoji Temple, a 1400-year-old Buddhist temple dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy. Afterwards, pay a visit to the Meiji Shrine, a Shinto shrine and the famous Shibuya Crossing, the world's busiest intersection, before returning to your hotel for an afternoon at leisure. You may wish to join an optional sushi making workshop with a Japanese chef and learn about Japanese food culture or take a Taiko drumming lesson and gain insight into these traditional drums before creating your own performance (both an additional expense).

Day 3 - Tokyo, Hakone, Tokyo

After breakfast, journey to Hakone to visit the picturesque Hakone Shrine known for its iconic red torji gate standing on the shores of Lake Ashi. Surrounded by lush forests and scenic views of Mount Fuji on a clear day, the shrine was very popular among samurai during the twelfth century and is hidden away in a dense forest.  Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant then head to Hakonemachi where you will board a boat taking you to Togendai. Both are ports on the shores of Lake Ashi, which is in fact an enormous volcanic crater created by an eruption 3,000 years ago. Afterwards, arrive in Togendai and continue your journey via Ropeway heading towards Owakudani. There are walking trails around Owakudani that lead to steam vents and bubbling pools surrounding this active volcano.

Day 4 - Tokyo, Kyoto

Transfer to Tokyo station for a high-speed bullet train bound for Kyoto. From there journey to the nearby town of Arashiyama. Discover Tenryuji Temple, a historic Zen temple known for its beautiful garden and UNESCO World Heritage status. It exemplifies traditional Japanese architecture and serene natural surroundings. Next, savour time in the tranquil Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. Stroll through the towering bamboo grove and marvel at one of the most breathtaking and iconic sites in all of Japan before seeing Nonomiya Shrine, a Shinto shrine where in ancient times, unmarried imperial princesses stayed for a year or more to purify themselves. The shrine is referenced in numerous works of literature, most notably in the world’s first novel; The Tale of Genji.

Day 5 - Kyoto

After breakfast, take a tour of Kyoto’s most famous landmarks including Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) with its shimmering gold leaf facade on the edge of a reflective pond, surrounded by lush forest. Afterwards, embark on your Insider Experience before indulging in lunch at a local restaurant. This afternoon, you may choose to partake in an origami class where you be guided through some basic designs or a calligraphy lesson, learning about the Chinese characters that Japanese use (both an additional expense).

Insider Experience — Japanese Tea Ceremony

Delve into traditional Japanese culture during a special tea ceremony experience. Learn all about tea varieties and the importance and process of serving tea to guests in Japan.

Day 6 - Kyoto, Nara, Kyoto

After breakfast, transfer to Fushimi. Visit Fushimi Inari Shrine. Featured in the movie “Memoirs of a Geisha”, this shrine is known for its thousands of red torii gates leading up and through the sacred forest of Mount Inari and has been voted the number one must see spot in Kyoto by visitors. Then head to Nara, Japan’s capital for 74 years during the 8th century and home to many temples and shrines built in that era. Visit Todaiji Temple, one of the world’s largest wooden structures and home to Japan’s largest Buddha. The park surrounding the temple is called Nara Park but is referred to by many as “Deer Park” due to the large population of more than one thousand tame deer who freely roam the streets and will bow their heads in exchange for a treat.  Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before visiting Nara’s most celebrated shrine, Kasuga Taisha. Established in 768 AD the shrine is dedicated to the deity tasked with the protection of the city and is famous for its hundreds of bronze and stone lanterns which have been donated by worshippers over the years.

Day 7 - Kyoto, Osaka, Embark Ship

After breakfast, travel to Osaka and take a walking tour of the Dotonbori, a popular shopping and entertainment district and is also known as a food destination. Then set off for your Insider Experience as you explore the market established during the Edo Period.  

Later after cruise registration transfer to your premium expedition ship, Heritage Adventurer, your home for the next 11 nights. Get to know your fellow travellers at a relaxed dinner on board this evening. 

Insider Experience - Kuromon Market

Sample a selection of local snacks the city is famous for as you stroll around the atmospheric Kuromon Market and discover traders selling fish, meats, traditional sweets and homeware items.   

Day 8 - Takamatsu

Your journey begins as you depart from the pier, embarking on a scenic drive to the Kinashi Bonsai Farm. Explore the artistry of bonsai cultivation, witnessing the meticulous care and craftsmanship that go into creating these miniature masterpieces. The Kinashi Bonsai Farm stands as a testament to the region's dedication to preserving this ancient horticultural art. 

Continue your journey with a drive to the Ritsurin Garden. Ritsurin Garden is the largest Cultural Property Garden in all of Japan and is an important cultural asset that has been maintained for 400 years. Originally created in the Edo period for the daimyo (feudal lord), the garden features six ponds and thirteen landscaped hills in front of the green vista of Mt. Shiun, along with stunning rock arrangements and a wide variety of beautiful plants. The garden was designed to be leisurely strolled through, and each step offers a new perspective on the garden's scenery.   

This afternoon, perhaps embark on an optional Pilgrim Tour.  

Enhance your Journey — Pilgrim Tour Guided by a Pilgrim (Ohenro) expert, explore the sacred grounds of Zentsu-ji Temple, the temple of the Shingon school of Buddhism. Then discover Konzo-ji Temple, a significant site that was the birthplace of Enchin, known as Chisho Daishi. 

Day 9 - Okayama

Journey to the Kurashiki Historical Quarter District, where Edo-era architecture paints a vivid picture of Japan's past. Engage in a traditional tea experience at Shinkei-En, nestled within the Ohara Museum, offering a serene setting to appreciate the nuances of Japanese tea culture. The Ohara Art Museum within this district houses are Japan’s first Museum of Western Art. The museum houses a diverse collection, including works by El Greco, Monet and Japanese masters. Afterwards, take a leisurely stroll through the charming Old Town (Bikan Area) of Kurashiki, characterised by well-preserved Edo-period architecture. As the day ends, embark on a scenic drive back to the port. 

Day 10 - Hiroshima, Miyajima Island

Board your coach and drive towards the poignant Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, commemorating the victims of the atomic bombing in 1945.  

Next, head to the Peace Memorial Museum, designed by renowned architect Tange Kenzo (1913-2005), to learn about the history of Hiroshima before and after the bombing through pictures, movies and displays. Your contemplative exploration concludes with a reflective drive back to the ship, carrying the echoes of Hiroshima's past and the aspirations for a harmonious future. 

This afternoon, arrive on Miyajima Island by Zodiac, stepping onto the shores of an island renowned for its harmonious blend of nature and culture. Take a scenic walk to Itsukushima Shrine. One of the three most scenic spots in Japan, and the World Heritage Site of Itsukushima Shrine shines brightly amid its beautiful scenery. Explore the intricacies of this Shinto shrine, from the iconic "floating" torii gate to the delicate details of the Honden (main hall). After your visit, enjoy a leisurely walk back to Miyajima Island port, where you can appreciate the island's maritime ambience. 

Day 11 - Uwajima

This morning, you may choose to embark on an optional Yusumizugaura & Pearl Farm Tour (additional expense). This afternoon, gain insight into the history of Ehime by visiting the Museum of Ehime History and Culture, where the corridors of time unfold through a diverse collection of artifacts. Wander through the historical enclave, where each step reveals the architectural marvels and tales of bygone eras. Immerse yourself in the ambience of the past as you stroll through the well-preserved streets. 

Enhance your Journey — Yusumizugaura & Pearl Farm Tour Learn about the pearl farming at the Doi Pearl Farm - the first pearl culturing farm in Ehime. Following the pearl exploration, drive to Yusumizu-ga-Ura Terrace field, a picturesque coastal area celebrated for its breathtaking views. The area was selected as one of the 100 most beautiful villages in Japan. Indulge in a unique experience by tasting boiled potatoes, a local delicacy that complements the serene ambiance of the terrace. 

Day 12 - Yakushima Island

This morning, view the area’s enchanting nature, beginning with a scenic drive to Yakusugi Land. Embark on a serene walk through the park, surrounded by the towering Yakusugi trees that have stood for thousands of years. Witness the enchanting beauty of this primeval forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Next, you will drive to Yakusugi Museum where the main exhibition hall displays information about natural history of Yakushima. Here you can learn about the Yakushima cedar trees, the products that come from them and how they were harvested. 

This afternoon you may choose to partake in a Yakushima Chopsticks Making Tour (additional expense). After the creative session, continue your journey to the Shitoko Gajumaru Banyan Park, a wonderland of sprawling banyan trees. Take a leisurely stroll through the park, appreciating the harmonious blend of nature and artistry. 

Enhance your Journey — Chopsticks Making Tour  Surrounded by the natural wonders of Yakushima, a World Heritage Site known for beautiful rainforest and wildlife, immerse yourself in the Yakusugi Chopsticks Making experience. Explore the artistry and skill behind crafting your own unique pair of chopsticks, a culinary instrument significant to this region. 

Day 13 - Nagasaki

Today, begin your day with a drive to the Atomic Bomb Museum, a reflection on the impact of the events of 1945. Explore the museum, gaining insights into the impact of the atomic bomb on Nagasaki and the subsequent efforts towards peace. Following this, drive to the remarkable Urakami Cathedral, known for its unique architectural design and significance in the post-war rebuilding efforts. The bombed remnants of stone statues have been arranged in the surrounding area, including the one bell that withstood the atomic bomb blast and continues to announce the hour three times a day.  

This afternoon, you may wish to take in an optional tour to see a captivating performance of Nagasaki Kenban – a traditional Geisha performance (additional expense).

Day 14 - Hagi

Your exploration starts with a drive from the port to Hagi Old Town. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Hagi Castle Town is an impeccably preserved example of a feudal Japanese town. Walk down the old streets and admire the residences of upper-class samurai, including important historical figures and wealthy merchants. Hagi Castle was built by Terumoto Mōri in 1604 and over the next 260 years, Hagi Castle Town prospered as the centre of the clan’s operations. Unearth Hagi's industrial history at the Hagi Reverberatory Furnace, a legacy of the Meiji (1868-1912) Industrial Revolution.  

After lunch, continue your exploration in the Samurai Quarter, wandering through the Samurai House and soaking in the historical charm of the area. 

Next, visit Toko-ji Temple. Founded in 1691, Tokoji is a temple of the Obaku School of Japanese Zen Buddhism. As you embark on a culinary adventure, head to a local restaurant for a delightful lunch. 

Later, you may wish to partake in an optional kimono experience (additional expense). Concluding our day, we return to the kimono shop for a quick change before heading back to the ship. 

Enhance your Journey — Kimono Experience  Behold the elegance of traditional Japan by visiting a local kimono store. Engage in a hands-on kimono-wearing experience, learning about the significance of these intricately designed garments. Then, stroll through Hagi's Old Town, a destination celebrating these vibrant kimonos.  

Day 15 - Ulsan, Busan

From the port of Ulsan, you may opt to visit Busan, known for its laid-back vibe and deep cultural roots. Then, head over to Yongdusan Park to explore a mountain shaped like the head of a dragon, rumoured to have defended Busan from oncoming enemies. Learn about Busan's history by visiting shrines and monuments on the mountain.  

Enhance your Journey — Highlights of Busan  Begin the tour by paying a visit to the famous Gamcheon Culture Village, a colourful lively community of Lego-looking houses. Head over to Yongdusan Park. Learn about Busan’s history by visiting shrines and monuments on the mountain.

Day 16 - Matsue

Delve into the history of feudal Japan by visiting one of the 12 original castles. The main tower has survived to this day through fires, earthquakes, and the anti-feudal demolitions of the Meiji Period. Next, take a short walk to the Matsue History Museum, located east of the castle. Designed to resemble a samurai residence, the museum features an in-depth view of the history and culture of the castle Matsue over its 400-year history. As a museum with national treasures, one of its collections contains the talismans (also designated as a National Treasure), showing the completion year of Matsue Castle’s construction. 

Perhaps, embark on an optional visit to the renowned Adachi Museum of Art (own expense).  

Enhance your Journey — Adachi Museum of Art  Explore this museum, celebrated for its exceptional Japanese gardens and extensive collection of modern Japanese art. Dive into exhibits showcasing the latest in culture and design from the region.

Day 17 - Kanazawa

Start today with a visit to Omicho Market. Established during the Edo Period, Omicho Market has formed an essential part of Kanazawa’s food culture for more than 300 years. Renowned for its fresh seafood and local delicacies, the market showcases the region's rich culinary heritage. Following this, embark on a scenic drive to Kenroku-en Garden, considered one of Japan's three most beautiful gardens. Originally developed in the 17th century, the garden boasts a harmonious blend of landscapes, including ponds, bridges, and teahouses. Adjacent to the garden stands Kanazawa Castle, a historic fortress with origins dating back to the Maeda clan in the late 16th century. A symbol of power and resilience, the castle offers a glimpse into Japan's feudal past. 

As the day unfolds, indulge in a delightful lunch on board your ship, before venturing into the Nagamachi Samurai District. This area preserves the atmosphere of a traditional samurai neighbourhoods, with well-preserved residences and narrow lanes. You may choose to round off your day with a cultural experience in the art of Golden Leaf craft, a meticulous technique used to decorate various objects with gold leaves.  

Enhance your Journey — Gold Leaf Experience  Learn about the process of producing this precious metal and discover tools used in Gold Leaf crafts. Staff will assist you in creating a personal item that you will be able to take with you once the workshop is over and keep as a unique souvenir of Kanazawa, the gold leaf capital of Japan. 

Day 18 - Kanazawa, Disembark Ship, Tokyo

Bid farewell to the ship as you commence the next leg of your adventure. Begin with a smooth transfer to Kanazawa Station, where the vibrant energy of the city awaits. The journey unfolds with a leisurely walk to the platform, allowing you to soak in the bustling atmosphere. Next, embark on a thrilling experience as you board the iconic bullet train from Kanazawa to Tokyo. En route, savour a delectable lunch box, showcasing the culinary delights of the region. The high-speed journey provides breathtaking views of the Japanese landscape. Upon arrival in Tokyo, it is time to board your onwards flight home.
