On our way to Kalbarri, we stop at the mesmerising Hutt Lagoon, whose vivid pink water results from sunlight acting upon the lake’s resident algae. The algae then produce betacarotene, the pigment also found in carrots and tomatoes. After witnessing this remarkable display, we continue north to Kalbarri, where we stay for two nights.
Western Australia boasts the largest collection of the world’s wildflowers. During spring, Kalbarri National Park erupts in a dazzling array of colours, with more than 800 species blanketing the ground. While here, we embrace the region’s great variety of plants, which are an expression of its distinctive climate and topography. Look for examples of Murchison rose and kangaroo paw, as well as carpets of pink and white everlastings. The park is also home to many impressive Eucalyptus trees, wattle and Banksia.
We leave Kalbarri after breakfast and take the road to Cervantes, the most southerly point of the Coral Coast. Shortly before arriving, we pause in Jurien Bay, where endangered Australian sea lions while away the hours along white, sandy beaches and swim in its crystal-clear waters. We then make our way to the Pinnacles Edge Resort.
Before we continue on our southerly journey, a stop at Lake Thetis reveals its remarkable stromatolites. The curious calcareous life forms produce oxygen for the Earth’s atmosphere and are the oldest living fossils on the planet. At Nambung National Park, we marvel at the iconic limestone pillars known as the Pinnacles. We arrive in Fremantle later this afternoon
