May to September. May and early June are driest with fewer crowds and lower fares. July and August are warmest with the best wildlife viewing. September brings autumn colour and quieter ports.
Inside Passage cruises are round trips, usually from Vancouver or Seattle, that stay in sheltered coastal water. Gulf of Alaska cruises run one way between Vancouver and Seward or Whittier, go further north to Hubbard Glacier, and link to Denali by land, which suits a cruise-and-rail trip.
Many travellers do, since Vancouver is the gateway to both. A Rocky Mountaineer journey or guided tour through Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper turns a week at sea into a two to three week holiday. The tradeoff is more time away and a higher total cost.
