May, June, September and October. They're warm, less crowded and better value. July and August are hot and busy, which makes walking tours harder.
Western sailings cover Spain, France and Italy, with shorter sailing times and more time in port. Eastern ones cover Greece, Croatia and Turkey, with more islands and ancient sites. Both usually start in Barcelona, Rome or Venice.
Most Mediterranean port calls run eight to twelve hours, enough for a guided highlights tour or independent exploration of the old town. Where the port sits well outside the city, as at Civitavecchia for Rome or Livorno for Florence, factor in an hour or more of transfer time each way when planning your day.
