There are a couple of ways to get to Tasmania.
The Spirit of Tasmania is a popular option amongst travellers keen to explore Tassie in the convenience of their own car. If you’re booking a Tasmania holiday package, such as a Tasmanian Vacations self-drive holiday with everything taken care of, car hire is already included, so there’s no need to bring your own vehicle.
Of course, the Spirit of Tasmania is not just for travellers wanting to take their own car. If you don't mind the longer travel time, crossing Bass Strait by sea is a leisurely way to begin a Tasmanian adventure, with sailings taking around 9 hours or so.
To get there faster, flying is equally popular, with flight times from Melbourne to Tasmania at just over an hour. Contact your nearest RACV Travel agency and one of the expert travel agents can help arrange return flights as part of your holiday.
Some of the best places to visit in Tasmania also happen to be among the island’s most picturesque.
Each year, visitors are drawn to Tassie’s stunning East Coast, home to Wineglass Bay, famous for its white-sand beaches and spectacular coastal views within Freycinet National Park. The Bay of Fires, known for its turquoise waters, pure white sands and distinctive orange lichen-covered boulders, is another favourite, as well as Bruny Island for its thriving food and wine scene.
The Gordon River near the quaint village of Strahan and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park are also among Tasmania’s must-see highlights.
In the capital of Hobart, one of the most popular things to do is visit the Saturday Salamanca Market and the vibrant waterfront precinct. From here, MONA (Museum of Old and New Art), Australia's largest private museum and one of Tasmania's most visited attractions, is just a short ferry ride away.
Just over an hour’s drive south-east of Hobart is the Port Arthur Historic Site, an UNESCO World Heritage-listed former convict settlement offering fascinating insight into Australia's colonial history.
