River Cruises

Discover river cruises with RACV Travel, gliding through the heart of Europe, Asia and Egypt aboard elegant small ships that carry few guests and dock right in the centre of each town.

A closer way to cruise, glide through the heart of the world's most storied landscapes.

River cruising trades the scale of an ocean liner for intimacy and access. Ships welcome fewer guests and berth in the middle of town rather than at an industrial port,  putting cathedral squares and riverside cafes minutes from your cabin. The scenery never leaves you, with vineyards, castles and villages sliding past the window all day. Sail the Rhine, Danube, Douro and Seine through Europe, the Mekong through Vietnam and Cambodia, or the Nile past the temples of Luxor, with trusted travel partners like Scenic, Travelmarvel, Avalon, APT and more.

Fares are typically far more inclusive than ocean cruising, covering most meals, drinks and daily guided excursions. RACV Members enjoy exclusive savings.

Frequently asked questions

River ships are far smaller, carrying around 100 to 200 guests compared with thousands, and sail inland waterways rather than open sea. That means calm water, a new town almost every day, central docking and more inclusive fares, but fewer onboard facilities such as multiple restaurants, pools and theatres.

River fares are usually close to all-inclusive, typically covering all meals, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, daily guided excursions, onboard entertainment and often gratuities and airport transfers. Optional premium excursions, some speciality dining and travel insurance generally sit outside the fare.

The Danube suits first-timers, linking Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava with the most variety in the shortest distance. The Rhine is the classic castles-and-vineyards route through Germany and the Netherlands. The Douro is quieter and wine-focused through Portugal, while the Seine and Rhone concentrate on France, food and Normandy history.
