No, Australians travelling to Japan for a holiday do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. If planning to stay longer than 90 days, a visa will be required and should be arranged well before departure to allow enough time for processing and approval.
Regardless of the length of stay, Australians must have a valid passport for the duration of their trip and have proof of onward or return travel. It’s always worth checking with your travel agent for expert advice just in case entry requirements change.
The best time to visit Japan depends on what you’d like to see and do.
Spring is one of the most popular times to visit Japan, thanks to the spectacular transformation that takes place across the country, when gardens and cities are overtaken by a sea of delicate pink blooms. The world-renowned cherry blossom season draws visitors from around the globe, with peak blooms typically occurring from late March to mid-April in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto on the main island of Honshu.
Further north on Hokkaido, cherry blossoms generally peak between late April and mid-May, while some varieties can begin flowering as early as January in Okinawa.
For fewer crowds and comfortable temperatures, autumn is a great time to visit and is considered one of Japan's most beautiful seasons. Vibrant shades of red, orange and gold transform temples and mountain landscapes across the country, with autumn colours typically on display between late September through to early December, depending on the region.
Spring and autumn are also the most popular seasons for Japan cruises, with operators such as Princess Cruises, Scenic and Emerald Cruises.
